“A page turner. . .Brooks is a master at bringing the past alive. . .in her skillful hands the issues of the past echo our own deepest concerns: love and loss, drama and tragedy, chaos and brutality.” – Alice Hoffman, The Washington Post A rich and utterly absorbing novel about the life of King David, from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of People of the Book and March. With more than two million copies of her novels sold, New York Times bestselling author Geraldine Brooks has achieved both popular and critical acclaim. Now, Brooks takes on one of literature’s richest and most enigmatic figures: a man who shimmers between history and legend. Peeling away the myth to bring David to life in Second Iron Age Israel, Brooks traces the arc of his journey from obscurity to fame, from shepherd to soldier, from hero to traitor, from beloved king to murderous despot and into his remorseful and diminished dotage. The Secret Chord provides new context for some of the best-known episodes of David’s life while also focusing on others, even more remarkable and emotionally intense, that have been neglected. We see David through the eyes of those who love him or fear him—from the prophet Natan, voice of his conscience, to his wives Mikhal, Avigail, and Batsheva, and finally to Solomon, the late-born son who redeems his Lear-like old age. Brooks has an uncanny ability to hear and transform characters from history, and this beautifully written, unvarnished saga of faith, desire, family, ambition, betrayal, and power will enthrall her many fans. "The Secret Chord is an impassioned study of the role of music in cultural life, written through the prism of Christian belief. Covering a range of musical styles and influences, from gospel music to X Factor, The Secret Chord conveys enthusiasm for music and its transformative powers. While a significant number of books have been published exploring the relationships between music, art, popular culture and theology - many of which we have enjoyed and from which we have benefited - such books tend either to academic analysis or semi biography about artistes whose output the writers' enjoy. By contrast, The Secret Chord is an accessible exploration of artistic dilemmas from a range of different perspectives which seeks to draw the reader into a place of appreciation for what makes a moment in a 'performance' timeless and special."--www.thesecretchord.co.uk.

Grab a standard open E chord and move it five frets up the neck and you will get a beautiful sounding Aadd9 chord. Open moveable chords are seldom described despite the vast amount of guitar literature available. Although often used by various artists these chords and chord systems are well kept secrets to many aspiring guitarists. This book will help expand your chord vocabulary with a set of new and refreshing chords that will inspire you and spark your creativity. Open moveable chords combine the movability of the barre chords and the easy fingering of the standard open chords, and they create some interesting new sounds at the same time. These types of chords will often add complex harmonic extensions to standard major/minor chords so this book focuses on scale degrees rather than chord names to simplify the theoretically complex nature of open moveable chords. The book also includes options for using pedal points on standard open chords. The Secret Chords contains explanatory introductions to each chapter but it is primarily a comprehensive collection of chord charts for open moveable chords. Read less and play more.

A Broken Hallelujah: Rock and Roll, Redemption, and the Life of Leonard Cohen

Brings to life a passionate poet-turned-musician and what compels him and his work. Why is it that Leonard Cohen receives the sort of reverence we reserve for a precious few living artists? Why are his songs, three or four decades after their original release, suddenly gracing the charts, blockbuster movie sound tracks, and television singing competitions? And why is it that while most of his contemporaries are either long dead or engaged in uninspired nostalgia tours, Cohen is at the peak of his powers and popularity? These are the questions at the heart of A Broken Hallelujah, a meditation on the singer, his music, and the ideas and beliefs at its core. Granted extraordinary access to Cohen’s personal papers, Liel Leibovitz examines the intricacies of the man whose performing career began with a crippling bout of stage fright, yet who, only a few years later, tamed a rowdy crowd on the Isle of Wight, preventing further violence; the artist who had gone from a successful world tour and a movie star girlfriend to a long residency in a remote Zen retreat; and the rare spiritual seeker for whom the principles of traditional Judaism, the tenets of Zen Buddhism, and the iconography of Christianity all align. The portrait that emerges is that of an artist attuned to notions of justice, lust, longing, loneliness, and redemption, and possessing the sort of voice and vision commonly reserved only for the prophets. More than just an account of Cohen’s life, A Broken Hallelujah is an intimate look at the artist that is as emotionally astute as it is philosophically observant. Delving into the sources and meaning of Cohen’s work, Leibovitz beautifully illuminates what Cohen is telling us and why we listen so intensely.

This book presents a complete methodology for learning how chord progressions work and how to apply these principles to your own creative endeavours. Any chord progression can be seen as a combination of tonic, dominant and subdominant chords. We employ 12 frequently used combinations which we call the core progressions. The first chapter demonstrates the core progressions in their simplest form using three major chords. Chapters 2-7 show which chords can be used as substitutes for the three majors to widen the range of expressive possibilities. This is similar to the way a painter uses a wider palette of colours beyond the primary colours of red, yellow and blue to achieve visual effects. Chapters 8 and 9 are about cyclic progressions and Chapter 10 details how to change keys. Each chapter starts with a theory section followed by a song examples section which shows how the core progressions are used in the context of many popular songs. You can follow up what you have learned by working through the composition exercises for each chapter. There is also a revision section for each chapter to enable the reader to review the learning material. There are two indexes, one for the song examples and one for the composition exercises. By using the links between these indexes and the contents page you can navigate the document to find what interests you. This will help you to develop a personalised approach to the learning material. There are four additional learning modules on blues progressions, song forms, the AABA format and its many variations, and 36 chord theory which shows how any chord will function in any key. The Secret Life of Chords is completely different to any other book on the market and is an invaluable resource for musicians of all levels.

Popular music is a growing presence in education, formal and otherwise, from primary school to postgraduate study. Programmes, courses and modules in popular music studies, popular music performance, songwriting and areas of music technology are becoming commonplace across higher education. Additionally, specialist pop/rock/jazz graded exam syllabi, such as RockSchool and Trinity Rock and Pop, have emerged in recent years, meaning that it is now possible for school leavers in some countries to meet university entry requirements having studied only popular music. In the context of teacher education, classroom teachers and music-specialists alike are becoming increasingly empowered to introduce popular music into their classrooms. At present, research in Popular Music Education lies at the fringes of the fields of music education, ethnomusicology, community music, cultural studies and popular music studies. The Ashgate Research Companion to Popular Music Education is the first book-length publication that brings together a diverse range of scholarship in this emerging field. Perspectives include the historical, sociological, pedagogical, musicological, axiological, reflexive, critical, philosophical and ideological.
